Granville T. Woods (1856- 1910)

In 1856, Granville T. Woods was born to free African American parents in Columbus, Ohio. 

After the Civil War, Granville became the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer. He started his own company to MANUFACTURE or make a large number of electrical devices. 

His most famous invention was the multiplex telegraph. A TELEGRAPH lets people send messages using code and electronics. Granville’s device made it possible for people to talk over telegraph wires. 

He became known as the “Black Edison” and registered almost 60 patents.
