Daisy Bates (1914-1999)

Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist and journalist. Daisy and her husband created The Arkansas Weekly, an African American newspaper that shared stories about the Civil Rights Movement. She was the President of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1957, she helped nine African-American students desegregate or become the first to attend an all-white school in Little Rock, Arkansas. This group became known as the Little Rock Nine. She continued to be an advocate for civil rights until her death in 1999.
