Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins (1867-1953)

After Ida Gray graduated from high school in 1887, she entered the University of Michigan Dental School. In 1890, she became the first African American woman to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Ida ran a successful private practice in Cincinnati.

In 1895, she married her first husband, James S. Nelson, and they moved to Chicago. She lived and continued her practice in Chicago for the rest of her life.
