Carol Mosely Braun
In 1992, Carol Mosely-Braun was elected the first and only black woman to serve in the US Senate. Senator Mosely-Braun supported and passed legislature to improve retirement security for women and for assistance in rebuilding deteriorating schools nationwide.
On November 8, 1999, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination of the former senator as an ambassador to New Zealand.
President Clinton nominated her to the diplomatic post after she lost her re-election bid in 1998.
Carol recently ran as a Democratic candidate for the 2004 Presidential race.
