Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950)

Carter G. Woodson is known as “The Father of Black History.” During the month of February, American take the time to embrace and honor the rich contributions of African Americans. During the 1920’s, Woodson created and promoted Negro History Week. This period in February was chosen because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

In 1976, Negro History Week became a month-long celebration.
